Vice President, Human Resources

This position is with CentraCare Health, a growing, integrated healthcare system with six hospitals, 20 clinic locations, and is central Minnesota’s largest employer, with nearly 10,000 employees and over 400 employed physicians and advanced practice providers. The Vice President of Human Resources (VPHR) reports to the President/CEO of CentraCare Health (CCH), participates as a member of the senior management team, and provides leadership and direction for the organization in the core functional areas of Human Resources: employment, compensation, benefits, payroll, employee health services, volunteer services, and employee labor relations to serve employees at all CentraCare entities which include St. Cloud Hospital (SCH); CentraCare Health (CCH); CentraCare Health–Melrose; CentraCare Health–Long Prairie; CentraCare Health–Sauk Centre; CentraCare Health–Monticello; CentraCare Health–Paynesville; CentraCare Clinics and Pharmacies, and St. Benedict’s Senior Community. The VPHR works closely and cooperatively with the board of directors, medical staff, community organizations, other management teams, employees and assigned governance committees to advance the organizations’ mission, vision, and core values. The VPHR also implements and abides by Customer Service Standards, supports and implements patient safety and other safety practices as appropriate, and supports and demonstrates Family Centered Care principles when interacting with patients and their families and with co-workers.


  • Participates in the development of system wide objectives; develops human resource philosophy and strategic planning in relation to personnel programs and trends in human resource management
  • Designs CentraCare Health system wide programs that facilitate the integration of services and programs that benefit the organizations within CentraCare Health, such as system wide benefit programs
  • Develops goals/objectives for Human Resource Departments, Employee Health Services, and Volunteer Services; reviews department performance in relation to established goals; implements change to affect continued performance improvement and to assure compliance with regulatory and legal requirements
  • Leads the HR management staff and related departments in the development/administration of department budgets for staffing, operational expenses, and capital expenditures; ensures that the department operates within approved budgets
  • Leads HR management to ensure appropriate selection, training, and supervision of HR staff
  • Leads CentraCare’s future workforce planning
  • Assists in leading CentraCare’s culture work initiatives
  • Guides CentraCare’s succession planning and leadership development
  • Personally performs or delegates HR management/staff to:
    -develop uniform employment practices/policies
    -develop compensation/benefits policies/procedures
    -establish effective Employee Health Service and Employee Assistance programs as well as a volunteer program
    -develop/maintain effective employee relations policies/procedures
    -participate in the negotiations process for five collective bargaining units
  • Because the facility is a 24/7 operation, this position may require mandatory participation in various schedules to accommodate on-call, day, evening, night, and/or weekend rotations or coverage


  • Leads the following HR management staff: Benefits Director, Talent Solutions Director, Compensation Director, Human Resources Director, Employee Health Services Director, Volunteer Services Director, Employee & Labor Relations Director, and Director of Human Resources for St. Benedict’s Senior Community and CCH – Monticello
  • Leads indirect department staff of 110


  • Responsible for the HR department budget of $5.9 million, plus $134.3 million for employee benefits system-wide, $810 million for retirement plans system-wide, and $2.6 million for related Volunteers and Employee Health departments
  • Also responsible for recommendations to the CEO on salary increase, new benefits, and personnel policies that have immediate financial impact on the hospital and CCH; payroll exceeds $600 million system-wide annually


  • Responsible for extensive internal/external contacts with members of the Boards of Directors, physicians, executive and management staffs of each corporation, employees, community members, governmental agencies and attorneys, all requiring professionalism, tact, and diplomacy
  • Must be willing and able to join Human Resource and Health care professional groups; patient, employee, and business confidentiality is essential


  • BA/BS in Human Resources, Business or equivalent experience required; Master’s in related field also required
  • At least 10 years’ experience in an executive level HR position required; understanding and knowledge of employment, labor law, and benefits/compensation required; experience with integration of clinics, hospitals, and long-term care facilities preferred
